Review: Menagerie

Menagerie #1 by Rachel Vincent

Menagerie (Menagerie, #1)

From Goodreads

When Delilah Marlow visits a famous traveling carnival, Metzger's Menagerie, she is an ordinary woman in a not-quite-ordinary world. But under the macabre circus black-top, she discovers a fierce, sharp-clawed creature lurking just beneath her human veneer. Captured and put on exhibition, Delilah is stripped of her worldly possessions, including her own name, as she's forced to "perform" in town after town.

But there is breathtaking beauty behind the seamy and grotesque reality of the carnival. Gallagher, her handler, is as kind as he is cryptic and strong. The other "attractions"--mermaids, minotaurs, gryphons and kelpies--are strange, yes, but they share a bond forged by the brutal realities of captivity. And as Delilah struggles for her freedom, and for her fellow menagerie, she'll discover a strength and a purpose she never knew existed.

Renowned author Rachel Vincent weaves an intoxicating blend of carnival magic and startling humanity in this intricately woven and powerful tale.

My Review

Menagerie was so good, I can't wait for the second book to come out.  Sigh!

This book is different than any of Rachel Vincent books which I know through the series of Soul Screamers.

Menagerie is about a traveling carnival with the freak shows and rides and of course all the carnival food.  Menagerie's main focus is on the freak show people or whatever you want to call them.  The difference is we get to see behind the scenes of the freaks.  We get to learn about them we find out just because they are freaks they have personality to them.  More human than freak.

Delilah Marlow is no different as she is visiting the freak show something happens to her that turns her from human to a freak.  She is taken into custody by the local police.  Than the owner of the Menagerie shows up and she is purchased by him to become part of the freak show.  What everyone does not understand is she is more human than a freak.  Gallagher, who is Delilah handler befriends her and the vow to change the Menagerie.  With a stoke of luck they do what they plan then the book ends leaving us hanging on a Cliff.

This really is a good book and I recommend picking it up and reading it.
